Where it Started

Why did I create Ryker Bites, because you know you have so much free time as a Mom! First, I started making them just for Ryker. This past summer we did a big road trip up to Montana to the Blackfeet reservation to see family. Let's just say the beginning of the road trip was off to a ROUGH start. We had done short camping trips with Ryker but nothing this long. It was also our first trip with our new rooftop tent as well. Before this we were camping with a big super comfy air mattress. The iKamper mattress just didn't compare and since I was still nursing it was so hard on my hips. By day 2 we were all a mess, so a few pit stops were in order.

Stop 1, the grocery store. Ryker had just got his pincer grasp down so he was ready for some new snacks. I can't even tell you how long I spent in the baby isle reading labels. It was insanely hard to find snacks that didn't have added sugars, natural ingredients, or a list of ingredients I couldn't even pronounce. It was so frustrating, why the heck was it this hard! Fresh fruit and veggies seemed like the real only way to go besides the couple other snacks we could find. Fresh isn't always feasible though. Road trips make it a little hard to have only fresh fruit and veggies. Coming home from this trip I was determined to find a snack I could give Ryker that wouldn't have all the extra crap that's in so much of our food.

We had bought a freeze dryer the year before to help preserve our garden harvest. I try to grow as much of our food as possible so I need multiple ways to preserve the food I grow. If you don't know much about freeze drying it removes the moisture through ice. Freezing it then drying it and doing it this was maintains the majority of the nutritional value. What better way to make a snack! My first batches I mixed anything and everything that I could. Kale, beets, spinach, zucchini, strawberries, blueberries, yogurt, etc! I would mix it all together freeze it into silicon molds then pop out onto the trays and let the freeze dryer do the rest. If I had any extra I would make yogurt packs with these reusable ones:

After a few runs I realized it was a lot of fruits and veggies for one batch, so then I began to refine the process. I started pairing fruits with veggies that I felt would go best together. In the beginning all the bites had yogurt in them which I eventually phased out. Taking out the yogurt made them hold their form better, which is so important.

So now that you know how they started how did they get to you? Moms like you! My other mom friends would tell me that I should start selling them and they would buy them. After a little hesitation(that good old fear of failure) I made the jump! And now not only do I make Ryker Bites for the Ryker man himself, but also for all of you! Stay tuned for more flavors as the seasons change and let us know what you think! Thank you for being apart of this journey with me and we'll see you next time.

Bye friends!

P.S. If you wanted to know our second stop it was to REI to get a small mattress pad that I could lay on for some added cushion which helped immensely! Since then we upgraded our mattress which was a big game changer as well.
